The City of Tulsa’s Greater Tulsa Area Hispanic/Latinx Affairs Commission invites the Tulsa community to nominate top Latinx/Hispanic students and any community hero for the 2023 Tomás Rivera Recognition of Excellence in Education.
Each year, the Commission recognizes outstanding Latinx/Hispanic students and community members (heroes) who are working to improve and advocate for the education of Latinx/Hispanic students.
Tomás Rivera was a Chicano author, poet, and scholar who was a strong advocate of education for Mexican American students. He was the first in his family to attend college; the first to receive the Quinto Sol Literary Award for his classic novel This Migrant Earth and the first Chicano to become a University Chancellor.
This year’s theme is “Here we are eager to educate ourselves and create a community!”. Nominations can be submitted online or they can be dropped off at Tulsa Community College Education Outreach Center, 2201 S. Garnett Road, Tulsa, OK, 74129.
If dropping off applications, please refer them to Gloria Arias. The Application deadline is March 6, 2023, at 5 p.m. Tomas Rivera 2023 Latinx in Education Award presentations are scheduled for May 2023 at the Central Library, 400 Civic Center.
