The City of Tulsa's January sales tax check, which covers the period from mid-November 2015 to mid-December 2015, as reported by the Oklahoma Tax Commission, totaled $20,605,908, showing a 1.5 percent increase from the same period one year ago. This total is 3.6 percent below budget estimates.
Use taxes for January totaled $1,910,592 which is down 8.3 percent from the same period a year ago, and 14.7 percent below budget estimates.
"We continue to see declines in our use tax for the year and for the first part of the holiday season, sales taxes were mostly flat. Falling short of budget estimates remains an area of concern," Mayor Dewey F. Bartlett Jr said. "We will continue to implement a hiring freeze in our general fund positions to help offset expenditures in our core services to the citizens of Tulsa."
Sales tax and use tax collections provide two-thirds of the City of Tulsa's general fund. Vital services such as police and fire protection, 911 emergency dispatch, snow and ice removal from streets, pothole repair and mowing of grass in medians and parks are supported by sales and use taxes.
