The Tulsa City Council will be hosting a Town Hall: Community Listening Session specifically for the Spanish-speaking community within Tulsa. The event will be on Saturday, May 14, from 2-4 p.m. in the East Central High School auditorium, located at 12150 E 11th St. and will be predominantly presented in Spanish.
City Councilors will dedicate the first hour to a Question & Answer session from attendees. The second half will be an open house, where attendees will have the opportunity to speak one-on-one with Councilors as well as representatives from other City departments and organizations. Attending City departments include Human Resources, Streets & Stormwater, Tulsa 311, Tulsa Parks and Working in Neighborhoods (WIN). External organizations including the Tulsa City-County Library Hispanic Resource Center, El Centro: New Sanctuary Empowerment Center, Tulsa Financial Empowerment Center, Community Health Connection and YWCA Tulsa will also be in attendance.
“I am proud to be one of the organizers of this town hall that focuses on engaging with Spanish speaking members of our community in their native language,” said Councilor Connie Dodson of District 6. “It demonstrates commitment in our efforts to be more inclusive of the many diverse cultures and communities that make up the larger Tulsa community.”
The event is intended for the Spanish-speaking community to learn more about the City Council’s role within the City and to allow for opportunities for citizens to directly speak with the Councilors.
"It is past time that every voice be present at our table,” said Councilor Crista Patrick of District 3. “So giving our Spanish-speaking community the chance to speak is of utmost importance to me. I'm thrilled about this opportunity for their voices to be heard."
Interpreters will also be in attendance to assist with language barriers.
